Why the specs choose five minutes
Employers buy hours of typing, not bursts, and five minutes is long enough that only sustainable technique survives it: hand tension, rhythm breaks and error-correction habits all surface in the back half. That’s why California’s CalHR spec requires typing certificates from proctored five-minute tests (minimum 40 WPM) and Pennsylvania’s Clerk Typist exam scores a five-minute take after error deduction — details on our administrative jobs page. If you’re preparing for any employment screen, this is the mode to train.
Reading the result
Your 5-minute net WPM with accuracy is the resume-grade number — “55 WPM, 97%, 5-minute test” is a claim that survives verification. Compare it on the ladder, check the job bands, and if the gap to your sprint score exceeds ~8 WPM, train endurance at this length until the two converge — that convergence is what “solid technique” measurably means.
