The 3-minute test is the balanced measure — long enough that fatigue and consistency show up in the score, short enough to retake without dread. It’s the default length on several major testing platforms, which is why so many people hold a number like 58 or 64 “on a 3-minute test.”

What a 3-minute score means

Three minutes is where sprint inflation fades: expect your result here to run a few WPM below your 1-minute score and within a couple of WPM of your true working pace. That makes it the right length for honest self-assessment, for pre-employment practice (close to the 5-minute certification format without the full grind), and for the “is my number good” question — our number pages’ verdicts assume exactly this kind of sustained score.

Reading the result

Check your score against the percentile ladder and the verdict pages — and if you’re testing for a job, do one thing differently: run the 5-minute version once too, because that’s the length the certification specs use, and knowing your 5-minute number before a screening test removes the surprise.
