The two-currency system: WPM and KPH

Data entry is the one field with its own speed unit. Prose-based roles list WPM; numeric roles — billing, payroll, medical coding, financial processing — list KPH (keystrokes per hour), measured on the 10-key numeric pad. The conversion for prose is KPH ÷ 300 = WPM (so 10,000 KPH ≈ 33 WPM of equivalent keystroke volume), but treat the two as separate skills: numeric-pad fluency doesn’t follow from fast prose typing, and postings that require “6,000 KPH alphanumeric” or “10,000 KPH 10-key” will test exactly that format. Entry-level numeric standards run 8,000–10,000 KPH; specialized roles ask 10,000–12,000+.

Data entry is the field where the accuracy floor (97–99%) exceeds the general office standard (95%) — and the reason is arithmetic, not fussiness: a transposed digit in a medical record or an invoice field costs more correction time downstream than five slow-but-correct entries. Employer tests reflect this by scoring net output and, increasingly, by penalizing uncorrected errors heavily enough that a careful 50 WPM candidate outscores a messy 65. If you’re preparing for a screening test: train the exact format (prose, alphanumeric, or 10-key), fix accuracy first, and quote your net number.

Getting to the competitive band
