Why 200 is a wall
Two hundred WPM is ~17 keystrokes per second — near the mechanical limits of sequential finger movement and, more binding, of error-free motor planning at speed. That’s precisely why stenotype exists: chording whole syllables per stroke sidesteps the sequential limit, which is how human real-time speech capture (speech runs 130–160 WPM, dense speech faster) actually gets done. On standard keyboards, the practical elite ceiling for sustained typing sits around 150–160 — and the population that can do even that is vanishingly small.
What the question usually means
Most people asking about 200 are calibrating their own ceiling. The useful recalibration: 100 WPM is the top 1%; 120 is competitive-class; 150 sustained is world-tier. Every one of those is a legitimate, trainable summit — and each is a rarer achievement than round numbers make it sound. The percentile ladder puts any score in honest context.
