What “WPM” actually is
WPM standardizes typing speed using a five-character “word” — spaces included — so WPM = characters per minute ÷ 5. That’s why “the” and “photosynthesis” don’t distort scores: the measure counts characters, then converts. The five-character convention is also what makes results comparable across every major test, language and era of typewriting research. Two flavors matter: net WPM counts only correctly typed words (the number to report), while gross WPM counts everything, errors included. A 65-gross/50-net result isn’t a 65; it’s a 50 with an accuracy problem.

WPM, CPM and KPH — converting between them
Three units describe the same thing at different zoom levels. CPM (characters per minute) is simply WPM × 5 — an average 40 WPM typist runs at 200 CPM. KPH (keystrokes per hour) is the data-entry industry’s unit: CPM × 60, so 40 WPM ≈ 12,000 KPH on alphabetic text — though data-entry KPH is usually measured on the numeric keypad, a different skill with its own benchmarks we cover separately. If a job posting mixes units, divide KPH by 300 to get the WPM equivalent.
Keyboard vs phone: two different averages
Mobile typing has its own literature: large-scale research on smartphone typing found thumb-typists averaging around 36–38 WPM, with young two-thumb typists closing in on laptop speeds. The averages on this site are physical-keyboard figures — comparing your phone WPM to a keyboard benchmark flatters neither. If you’re curious, run our test on both devices and meet your own gap.

Is WPM the same in every language?
The unit is — five characters per word — but averages differ by language and keyboard layout. Figures on this site are for English on QWERTY.
What’s the highest WPM ever recorded?
The classic record is Stella Pajunas’ 216 WPM on an IBM electric typewriter (1946); modern competitive typists have posted 200+ WPM bursts on short passages. Sustained elite typing lives in the 120–160 range.
Why is my WPM different on every test?
Text difficulty, test length and warm-up. Shorter tests run hotter; unfamiliar words slow you down. Take three runs and use the median — and compare only same-length tests.
